King Pine Race Report
This was my first tri all by myself since Pumpkinman 08! I knew I needed to get back into racing, to see if it brought back my enthusiasm. It was early, it was cold, and we got lost?! on the way there (and on the way home for that matter) so I had limited time to register (that was messed up) and get my transition set up. I didn't spend a lot of time waiting around. I started front and center at the swim start, I should've started more towards the left now that I think about it afterwards, (it was a c-shaped left turning course) and I was way out in front for the first few minutes, I could see there was no one close, very exciting! I wanted to have a great swim time and I was using a brand new wetsuit...but then, I died! I died on a 1/3 mile swim! Unreal! I should've been about a minute faster. I haven't done much fast swimming at all so you can see, training does really make me faster, I hadn't been sure of that before. The bike went well, passed a bunch of people, played tag with Tom and Bill, it was short, only 12.5 miles but I was still ready for it to be over when it was. The run...my goal was just not to have an asthma attack! I sounded like a squeaky toy, wheezing and it hurt. I thought I was running 10s but it turned out to be 9:30s. A 3.8 mile, mostly offroad course, or at least half, I got passed AT THE FINISH LINE, to finish second in my age group. I should be upset but I dogged the run, and blew the swim or I would've finished first! Even if I had it in me to sprint the finish I would've been first but I didn't. The good new is no asthma attack and no dry heaving at the end. And now I am glad I did it, and I am thinking about doing more races, like the even up in the northern kingdom of VT, 3.5 mile swim! 35 mile bike, 13.1 mile run. Havent signed up yet, that would be a committment! I wonder...is my asthma getting worse or is it just this time of year? Am I hyperventilating and can I stop while working out? We had a mile winter, does that make more mold and pollen now? Am I really allergic to mold and or pollen?

The spirit of Saturday's Turkey Trot in downtown Wolfeboro was not lost on these four runners, who got decked out in their Thanksgiving garb for the 16th annual race, which benefits the Wolfeboro Lions Club's fuel assistance fund. Left to right, Lisa Davy of Laconia, Jennifer Marts of Sandwich, Jacklyn Calley of Laconia and John Eisner of Meredith won prizes for their great running gear. See race results in the sports section.
